Graphics (continued) If I had to compare the improvements graphically I would probably say they are on par with the improvements made to European Air War. In fact, the game has something of an updated EAW feeling to it graphically. While EAW has never been the beauty queen of flight simulations it always was serviceable and the gameplay more than made up for it’s graphic shortcomings.
Likewise FCJ won’t take the graphic crown from LOMAC but the improvements mean that now you won’t be negatively distracted by the graphics. What appeals to me the most is how well the game looks with the Glide wrapper.
I have tried to use glide wrappers with RB3D in the past with less than stellar success. RB3D in non-3D mode looks, well dated.
Very few people still have V2’s or later V4s or 5s in their boxes so a good glide wrapper is very important. Glidos works well but the game isn’t perfect with it. I did notice some graphical errors with the game, especially if the game ran for longer than 20 or 30 minutes. I found that terrain tiles wouldn’t load properly and graphics for aircraft would either come up wrong or simply would not be present. This tended to be present more in campaign mode rather than with single player missions.
It didn’t happen every time but when it did it was quite noticeable. On the other hand it renders most things well enough, you get the ‘opaque cockpit’ that wasn’t available in software mode, it runs with FCJ well and you don’t get any real crashes with the game. Not everyone is posting some of the graphics boo boos that I have, they may be driver related but don’t expect total perfection here. If you think that this is a reason to not buy the update, well, don’t. If you own a Voodoo based video card these problems are probably moot. Even those with newer cards in general report that the game runs well and looks good. The biggest problem with glide wrappers and video cards tend to be difficulties with game slowdowns, especially for those with older machines.
Unless you have a higher end Pentium III with a 64 meg video card you may see some serious slowdowns with the game. I had rock solid gameplay with fps’s in the range of 70-110fps in general but my machine is a relatively fast PIV 2.8GHz with an 800MHz FSB and 1 Gig of RAM.
I am willing to bet that many RB3D players are working with Pentium III boxes still. Probably the biggest problem with the game these days is the relatively short drawing distance of the horizon and some objects. Even with all the graphic updates given by Kess the game still has an ‘in the goldfish bowl’ feel that probably can’t be corrected. Lets face it, the code for RB3D is over seven years old now and there is only so much you can do.
Luckily, this is less of a problem for a WW1 flight sim than a more modern jet or even WW2 sim. Aircraft in WWI were lucky to hit 140 mph in level flight so the time it takes to traverse terrain is much slower than it would be in a game like EAW. You will notice the distance limitations in the game, especially if you have played games like IL2 or CFS3 but unlike the distance limitation won’t create gameplay problems.

Ok, so overall the graphic impressions I got with the game is mixed but generally I have a positive view of the graphics. Compared to the original game the graphics are a massive improvement.
The game looks so much better than it did before. Immersion has improved dramatically as a result. Still, it is not a modern game graphically. If I had to place a year to which the game was updated I might boost it to a game released in late 99 or early 2000. Does that bring the game to ‘the 21st century’ graphically? Maybe, but barely.
That’s not a bad thing, especially when there is little else out there. Plus, the real strength of FCJ is the base game it works with, Red Baron 3D.
VonOben's Flight Sim Mods - Misc Misc Files for Red Baron 3D These files are posted on this site with permission from Greybeard, Gabi Laser, Lon Chaney Jr, RON65RON and Skidmark. This model covers allied balloons in use along western front. Like the real one in available photos, it shows no national markings. This patch improves shape by greater detail, adding thickness and curves where stock model is flat and straight. Suited intact and damaged skins included. It features also high-detail and medium-distance models.

Size: 40 kB By: vonOben April 07, 2009 updated with long distance model. New flight model and damage model. Plane models have been updated too as well as some textures.
A proper 'MissGen.txt' has been added to make it playable with Pat Wilson's MissionGen. Aircrats specifications that you can read in game are actual ones; date of appearance is not set to historical time but just add 2 years - e.g.: 1917=1919! Replaced Nieuport 24 with the more historical 24bis.
Size: 2962 kB By: Greybeard June 19, 2010 Eastern Front 1916-1917 The war in the East did not involve as many planes as did the Western Front, in fact, the planes usually were 6 months to a year behind the Western front. Castoffs were common, like the SSW D1 (a nieuport clone), the SPAD A2, the Roland D2, and others which had been long removed from the skies over France. The Russian Revolution took Russia out of the war in Dec 1917, although German and Austrian aviation units were still stationed there until the end of the war (just to keep an eye on things). By: Munro Cossack's song, White, Red and Polish Army march as well as Imperial Russian anthem suitable for Coup de Grace - Add-on for Munro's patch 'Russian Civil War Size: 4293 kB By: Golgo June 19, 2010 The Parseval-Sigsfeld kite-balloon was first to combine advantages of spherical balloon and man-lifting kite, the two device available at that time for aerial observation.
In 1896, the two german officers designed their 'Drachen' (later nicknamed 'Sausage' by Allies), getting both qualities of balloon and kite, that's to say to be able to ascend in a calm (when the kite would be useless) and kept from rotating and oscillating in a high wind, as does the ordinary captive balloon. This model covers german balloon in use along western front, in the single slot available for german forces. Shape and detail has been improved adding many faces in respect to stock model. Suited intact and damaged skins are included. It features also high and medium detail models. Size: 147 kB By: Greybeard December 17, 2009 This model features most common type of hangar tent seen on photographs of german aerodromes. It could shelter one two-seater or two scouts.
Size: 135 kB By: Greybeard January 13, 2010 Soon after airplane appearance, need for its sheltering became urgent. Early hangars were made of canvas. Most common on allied side was the Bessonneau, which use started in January 1915 and was prolonged up to 1930s. Built in various sizes, the one here represented is the 20m x 24m, that's to say 66x79'. Having an overall height of 25'5' and 13'2' at sides, it was a 6 bay, light timber structure, covered with canvas. This model replaces stock wooden 'Large hangar' and, having historical dimensions, looks significantly smaller than previous, enormous shelter (which was more than 165' wide - 50m).
I gave it a mix of colours, just a rough conversion of what I had to RB palette: please consider it a coarse template and feel free to repaint bitmaps at your will. Included, are high, medium and low details model. Size: 111 kB By: Greybeard December 08, 2009 This mini-patch is suited for Hell's Angels 'SuperPatch' and Hell's Angels Gold, by Otto von Stachel. In original Hell's Angels the centre part of wing in F2 view isn't centered.
This patch fixes that problem. Size: 14 kB By: Greybeard April 21, 2005 Theses three mini-patches is suited for Hell's Angels 'SuperPatch' and Hell's Angels Gold, by Otto von Stachel.
Halberstadt D.II wings span fix: Pat Wilson's Halberstadt D.II has upper and lower wings of equal span; this is historically not correct, since they was respectively 28'11' and 25'11'. This patch shows the actual spans in Hell's Angels.
Halberstadt D.II internal view of radiator fix: In original Hell's Angels radiator viewed from cockpit in virtual internal view (F2) is shifted to left, so that wing strut looks fitted in its centre. This mini-patch relocates radiator to the correct position. DH2 cockpit internal view fix: In original Hell's Angels the centre part of cockpit doesn't fit with the upper part, leaving two black corner on each side along the rim. This mini-patch fixes that problem. Size: 60 kB By: Greybeard December 14, 2007 This is a modification to have a closer to reality player's point of view in 'virtual cockpit' (F2) of Red Baron 3D patched with HASP. It has been moved forth while wings and their struts have been generally lowered to get a layout as close as possible to historical one. Where applicable, wing chord and its incidence have been made more realistic.
Original or at least scaled drawings have been used as reference. Not all flyable have been revised yet. Size: 242 kB By: Greybeard June 14, 2008 This patch features celluloid translucent portion of top wing as applied on some Nieuports 17 servicing for british during WWI to increase pilot's field of view. This patch works only in Glide mode! Size: 42 kB By: Greybeard March 27, 2009 This is a patch to have N°6 Naval Squadron, servicing Nieuports 17bis; it replaces Sopwith Snipe while 6th RNAS shares same 'slot' with 43rd RFC which supersedes on 29 august.
Nieuport 17bis also replaces Nieuport 24 only in 'elite' french units, simulating too the mixed presence of Nieuport 24bis, almost identical. Some 'asimmetrical' cockpits have been added, to better simulate aiming position (SPAD 13, Camel, Albatros D2, D3 and D5, Nieuport 24).
In addition, some upper wing bottoms have been refined and rudders colored. Since flight model has been revised to accomodate Nie.17bis(.), its ailerons effectiveness has been improved, as well as that of all other Nieuports (11, 24 and 'standard' 17). Gotha is now flyable by AI too. If used in conjunction with Gabilaser's ReLoad with 'Front Guns' option enabled, you'll see recon two-seaters fighting back using also their fixed forward machinegun. A proper MissGen.txt has been added.
Slightly corrected Pfalz D XII equivalent wingspan (according to Munk's factor). Improved many gunsights (that of Dr I even simulates an Oigee reflector gunsight). Aircrats specifications that you can read in game are now actual ones. New in version 10: Improved shape for all two-seats rear internal view. Added some gray tyres for more realism.

Revised MissGen.txt to reduce crash risks. Eventually corrected 'Chachy' aerodrome to 'Cachy'. Some more minor refinement.
Size: 1987 kB By: Greybeard July 7, 2010 This patch modifies the shape of the D.F.V. C V in Hell's Angels Super Patch and is suited only for it. Resized bitmaps are also included. Version 2 updated with historical shape of rudder. Size: 190 kB By: Greybeard October 18, 2008 Italian Front This is the second incarnation of the Italian patch! - this time with accurately modelled planes, not just one model painted up to look like something else. It represents the battles fought in Northern Italy between the Italians ansd their Autro-Hungarian opponents, with the Germans, British, and French arrriving there in small numbers in late 1917.

July 5, 2002 A complete list of the numerical bitmap designations for non flyable stock RB3D Aircraft. Size: 5 kB By: RON65RON. July 9, 2002 This is a modified version of the OpenGlide wrapper 008.
In earlier versions you had to limit texture memory to 2MB or 4MB in the glide options to avoid graphic corruption. This version can be used with more memory without graphic corruption and you can set 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128 or 256 MB of texture memory in OpenGlide.ini. Also you should modify the display frequency to match the best for your monitor and in-game resolution. For a CRT monitor, something around 100, for a LCD, something around 70. But check your display properties first. For faster game play, set Sun glare to off in Red Baron Realistic preferences.
